Why Now is a Good Time for Your Trekking Tour in Sapa

Sapa is a year-round destination, but the summer months are particularly charming. The wintery fog that often blankets the region through until spring has passed, revealing the lush, green terraced fields and stunning mountain views.

While there may still be some rain, it adds a fresh, invigorating feel to the air. The rain also enhances the beauty of the landscapes, making the terraced fields even more vibrant and the waterfalls more impressive.

If you don’t mind the occasional downpour, now is an excellent time to enjoy Sapa’s natural beauty without the crowds.

If you need more convincing about why you shouldn’t miss trekking in Sapa, read our blog post: 5 Reasons Why You Should Go Trekking in Sapa.

Essential Clothing for Your Trekking Tour in Sapa

1. Weather-Appropriate Layers

Base Layer: Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Synthetic or merino wool fabrics are ideal for this purpose.

Mid Layer: A warm mid-layer, such as a fleece jacket or lightweight down sweater, is essential for the cooler mornings and evenings. This layer should provide insulation while still being breathable.

Outer Layer: A waterproof and windproof jacket is a must-have. It will protect you from rain and wind, ensuring you stay dry and comfortable throughout your trek.

2. Comfortable Trekking Pants

Choose quick-drying, moisture-wicking trekking pants. Convertible pants that can be zipped off into shorts are a great option, providing flexibility for varying temperatures throughout the day. These are especially good if you pass through long grass; zip the trouser sections back on to avoid cuts, scrapes, and… leeches!

3. Sturdy Trekking Boots

A good pair of trekking boots is crucial. Choose waterproof boots with good ankle support and a non-slip sole to handle the sometimes slippery and uneven terrain of Sapa’s hiking trails. Add cushioned, shock-absorbing insoles for that extra layer of comfort and support.

4. Breathable Socks

Pack several pairs of moisture-wicking, breathable socks to keep your feet dry and blister-free. Merino wool or synthetic blends that properly fit your feet are the best choices, see that excess material around your toes and heel? That should not be there.

5. Sun Protection

Even if the weather is cloudy, UV rays can still cause sunburn. Bring a wide-brimmed hat or a cap, sunglasses with UV protection, and a good-quality sunscreen (extra points for SPF 50).

If we had 1,000 VND every time someone showed up to do our Ha Giang loop tour at our Bông Ha Giang Hostel sunburnt after hiking in Sapa, then we could buy a Bánh mì for all our easy-riders! (And we have many!)

6. Lightweight Clothing for Warm Days

On warmer days, you’ll appreciate having lightweight, breathable clothing. Pack a couple of moisture-wicking t-shirts or tank tops and lightweight shorts.

Accessories and Gear for Your Trekking Tour in Sapa

1. Trekking Poles

Trekking poles can significantly reduce the strain on your knees and provide stability on uneven terrain—we are big fans! They are particularly useful on steep ascents and descents.

2. Backpack

A comfortable, well-fitting backpack is essential for carrying your gear. A 20-30 liter daypack should be sufficient for a multi-day trek, provided it has a good suspension system and is equipped with a rain cover.

3. Hydration System

Staying hydrated is critical during your trek. Bring a hydration bladder or reusable water bottle and consider using a water purification method, such as a portable filter, UV pen, or purification tablets, to ensure you have access to safe drinking water.

4. Headlamp or Flashlight

A reliable headlamp or flashlight is indispensable, especially for early morning starts and sunrise hikes. Or if you find yourself trekking after dusk. And no, your phone doesn’t count!

Proper planning prevents poor results; we’d hate to think of you struggling with your phone when the bright beam of a flashlight could have been much more useful. Plus this way you can save your battery and use your phone for what it does best, taking great pics when the sun comes up!

P.S. We always use a headlamp so our hands are free and don’t forget extra batteries.

5. Personal First Aid Kit

When booking a trekking tour with Bong Hostel you can rest assured that our guides always carry a first-aid kit. However, if you want to be extra prepared and know of certain personal medications you might need, then we recommend bringing a small one with you.

Your first aid kit should include band-aids, blister treatment, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and personal medications. It’s always better to be prepared for minor injuries or ailments.

6. Snacks

Who doesn’t love a good snack? And the best thing about hiking in Sapa is it gives you the perfect excuse; you’re doing lots of exercise, so you need plenty of snacks to keep your energy levels up.

The perfect high-energy snacks for hiking include trail mix, energy bars, nuts, and dried fruit.

7. Multi-Tool

A small multi-tool can come in handy for a variety of situations, from fixing gear to preparing food.

Electronics and Documentation

1. Camera

Sapa is a photographer’s dream—if you couldn’t already tell from these pictures—so don’t forget your camera. Ensure it’s charged and has enough memory to capture the stunning Sapa scenery, busy markets, and the daily life of the local ethnic communities.

2. Power Bank

A mobile phone is essential for communication, navigation, and emergencies. But there’s no nightmare quite like running out of phone battery when you really need it; pack a power bank to keep your devices charged throughout the trek.

3. Sapa Trekking Map

While your Bong Hostel trekking guide will have a route planned, it’s always good to have a trekking map of the area and a copy of your itinerary. This helps you stay informed about your progress and what to expect each day.

4. Identification and Permits

Carry a copy of your passport, any required permits, and emergency contact information. These are important for identification and in case of any unforeseen issues. You will also need a copy of your passport once you arrive at the homestays.

Hygiene and Personal Care

1. Toiletries

Pack travel-sized toiletries, including toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, a shampoo bar, and a washcloth. Wet wipes and hand sanitizer are also useful for quick clean-ups.

2. Insect Repellent

Insects but especially mosquitoes can be a nuisance in Sapa. Bring a good-quality insect repellent to protect yourself from bites and apply it day and night—this could save your life!

3. Travel Towel

A quick-drying, microfiber travel towel is essential for staying clean and dry. It’s compact, lightweight, and dries much faster than a regular towel.

4. Lip Balm and Moisturizer

The mountain air can be dry and harsh on your skin. Pack a good lip balm and moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

5. Rain Cover for Backpack

Even if your backpack is water-resistant, a rain cover provides an extra layer of protection against heavy rain. Keeping your gear dry is crucial for comfort and safety.
