Vietnam's Lim Festival 2025: A Complete Guide to This Cultural Celebration
Before you pack your bags and head to Bac Ninh, let’s dive into everything you need to know about the Lim Festival 2025.

If you’re planning to experience the heart and soul of Vietnam’s cultural scene, the Lim Festival in Vietnam 2025 should be at the top of your list!

Imagine this: a colorful explosion of traditional music, street processions, and lively folk games, all set against the stunning backdrop of Bac Ninh Province.

But before you pack your bags, let’s dive into everything you need to know about this epic cultural celebration.

What is the Lim Festival?

The Lim Festival is one of the most famous traditional festivals in Vietnam, celebrating the art of Quan Ho singing, a UNESCO-recognized form of folk music.

This centuries-old festival isn’t just about singing, though. It’s a full-blown extravaganza featuring:

  • Traditional parades and processions.

  • Folk games like human chess, tug-of-war, and cockfighting.

  • Mouthwatering local food stalls.

  • Beautiful traditional costumes.

When and Where is Lim Festival 2025?

So, when is the Lim Festival in 2025? Get your calendars ready—it’s happening on February 11-12, 2025, during the 12th to 13th day of the first lunar month.

The festival occurs annually at Lim Hill in the Tien Du District of the Bac Ninh Province, just 20 km from Hanoi, so it's easily accessible if you feel as though it is calling your name.

The Origins of the Lim Festival

The Lim Festival traces its roots back over 300 years. Some say its origins stem from Quan Ho folk singing traditions, while others credit Mandarin Nguyen Dinh Dien, an 18th-century figure who revitalized Bac Ninh’s temples, pagodas, and cultural festivals.

Originally celebrated in the eighth lunar month, the festival later shifted to the first lunar month, solidifying its place as one of the region’s most important and beloved events.

At the heart of the festival lies Lim Hill, where the grand incense-offering ceremony takes place at Lim Pagoda, dedicated to Nguyen Dinh Dien.

Locals don their finest Ao Tu Than (four-panel dresses) and Non Quai Thao (wide-brimmed hats) to pay tribute to their ancestors in a display of reverence and tradition.

If music is your thing, prepare to be enchanted by Quan Ho singing—a poetic call-and-response duet between male and female performers dressed in stunning traditional outfits.

These performances take place in communal houses, on boats along the waterways, and even right on Lim Hill.

Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, Quan Ho is an art form that speaks of love, nature, and daily life, making it an emotional and captivating experience.

3. Religious Ceremonies

Pilgrims visit pagodas and temples, such as the Lim Pagoda, to offer prayers and take part in spiritual rituals honoring Ba Mu, the deity worshiped in Bac Ninh.
