What Even Is the Ha Giang Loop?

Whoops, you mean you don’t know what the Ha Giang Loop is? Okay you’re new here—no worries, let me break it down!

Imagine riding a motorbike through a real-life postcard: soaring limestone mountains, rice terraces that tumble down into the valleys like jagged green waterfalls, and roads that wind like spaghetti. That’s the Ha Giang Loop.

The Loop is a roughly 350 km motorbike adventure through northern Vietnam's most beautiful province.

It starts (and ends) in Ha Giang City, weaving through local ethnic villages and towns, mountain passes like Tham Ma, and more scenic views than your phone storage can handle.

It’s equal parts exhilarating, humbling, and totally unforgettable. And while you can ride it yourself, most sane people opt for an Easy Rider. Speaking of which...

What’s a Ha Giang Loop Easy Rider?

More Than Just a Chauffeur

An “Easy Rider” isn’t some laid-back cowboy on a Harley (though the name does sound cool). In Ha Giang an Easy Rider is a local Vietnamese motorbike driver.

This person’s job is not only to keep you safe and happy, but to act as your chauffeur, cheerleader, and occasionally—if you try to skip a meal—a concerned parent.

But it’s really no surprise considering an Easy Rider’s love language is: “An com chua?” (Did you eat rice yet? Did you?! DID YOU?!)

They know the loop like the back of their hand, can handle the hairiest hairpin turns with ease, and help you see the region through a truly local lens.

Oh, and they’ll probably become your new best mate, so to my fellow solo travelers—Bong Hostel has got you covered with the friendliest Easy Riders in Ha Giang!

Why You (Probably) Shouldn’t DIY

Sure, you could rent your own scooter and wing it—lots of travelers do. But trust me, when you encounter a mudslide that turns the road into a slip ’n slide, or you get a nail in your tyre…

Orrrr you get stopped by the police (again) and can’t navigate your way out of your second fine of the trip, (make sure you have your International License peeps!), you’ll be grateful to have someone who:

  • Speaks fluent “hiccups and engine groans” (plus Vietnamese, of course)

  • Knows which homestay has the best Happy Water

  • Won’t let you starve on a mountaintop

That, dear reader, is the magic of having the Best Ha Giang Loop Easy Rider at your side.

Why Bong Hostel has the Best Ha Giang Loop Easy Riders

Full disclosure, I’ve ridden the loop more times than I’ve had bowls of pho (and I LOVE pho) so yes, I’m biased, but, let me tell you—no one does it like the Bong boys (and girls, on occasion). Here’s why:

1. They’re Sweethearts in Sunglasses

Respectful? Always. Attentive? To a fault. Politeness level? Grandma. Bong Hostel Easy Riders genuinely care about their guests.

They greet you with a grin, they remember your name, and they’re always ready for a joke—or a shoulder/back to lean on during those hungover moments on the bike.

2. Safety First, Then Adventure

These lads could probably drive up Ma Pi Leng with their eyes closed, backwards—if that was a thing! But they won’t, because they’re extremely safe.

They won’t ride through a rainstorm if it’s dodgy, they help you put your helmets on (even after you say "I’m fine, bro"), and they respect traffic rules like a traffic cop respects… well, traffic rules.

Their bikes are in top shape. And they respect their guests and their leaders (you might not realise how important this last part is but when you see a swarm of other tour companies overtaking your group… on a corner… you’ll get it!).

3. Lunch Enforcement Squad

I made the rookie mistake of skipping lunch one day (it was a hungover thing). Thought no one noticed. At dinner my Easy Rider proceeded to hand-feed me with chopsticks.

Yeah, not a proud moment for me, but also, deeply wholesome. There was no getting out of it, apparently. And honestly? Best. Rescue. Mission. Ever.

4. Guest Happiness = Mission Critical

If a guest even looks slightly off, their rider is already on the case. Need a pharmacy? They’ll be calling me from a mountaintop, checking which medicine you need.

Feeling shy? They’ll ask me how to help you open up (btw it's always bracelets, lollipops, or that extra shot of Happy Water—or all three!).

They go above and beyond because they want to. It’s just who they are.

Why Bong Hostel's Easy Riders Love Their Jobs

Let’s get real: being an Easy Rider is a GOOD job in Ha Giang. Bong Hostel makes sure of it.

1. Perks & Pay

They get accommodation and food covered on tour, which is a massive deal. Plus, guests are generally generous with tips (wink wink).

And no, they’re not forced to work every day. Unlike some companies (no shade, just facts), our riders can choose how often they drive.

Want time off? Take it. Love the road? Drive every day. Their call.

2. Wholesome Work-Life Balance

Even our younger riders have families. It’s a whole thing watching them come back from a loop, big smiles on their faces, then rush off to buy snacks or little toys for their kids with their tip money.

And because family is such a big deal to us too, we make sure they get proper time off for important occasions—like Tết (Vietnamese Lunar New Year).

While other companies might keep the wheels spinning through the holidays, we hit pause so our riders can celebrate properly with their loved ones.

After all, a happy rider = a happy (and safe) Loop.

3. Driver of the Month

Every month, we read through all your glowing reviews to crown a new Easy Rider MVP. We’re talking bragging rights and a cash reward.

Do we read every single comment you leave? Oh yeah. Last month’s batch took me TWO HOURS. Some of you are poets. Others? Agents of chaos.

It’s competitive, it’s fun, and it keeps the bar sky-high for “Best Ha Giang Loop Easy Rider.” So keep those reviews coming.

Let’s Talk Tips For Easy Riders (The Cash Kind)

Why Tips Matter

While tipping is never expected, it is appreciated. To an Easy Rider the tip they receive is a reflection of the service they have provided throughout the tour.

To them a good tip means they have made you happy, and that’s really all they want at the end of the day.

While it might be the price of a meal back home, a few extra hundred thousand VND to an Easy Rider can mean groceries, school supplies for their little ones, and a repair bill paid without worries.

How Much to Tip

General rule: 200,000 VND per day is solid. More if they blew your mind, which, let’s face it, they probably did.

Psst… Forgot cash? No stress. Tell your tour leader and he’ll make sure you swing by the ATM on the way back to Ha Giang City.

Bonus tip: add a review. It goes straight into their monthly competition tally and boosts their reputation!

Bong Hostel Ha Giang Loop Tour Leaders

Well we can’t talk about Easy Riders without talking about the glue that holds them all together: our Bong Hostel tour leaders.

They’re the ones making sure everyone’s where they should be, translating, setting the vibe, and keeping the Happy Water flowing.

They train new riders, answer every question under the sun, and genuinely love this job. Basically? They’re legends.

Interesting fact: We now have over 700 Ha Giang Loop Easy Riders at Bong Hostel and 40 Tour Leaders! That’s making a huge contribution to the economy and livelihoods of locals in Ha Giang.

So, Who Is the Best Ha Giang Loop Easy Rider?

Is it the one who made you laugh until you cried? The one who bought you a cute bracelet at Tham Ma Pass? The one who noticed you needed medicine before you did? The one who hand-fed you lunch like a concerned auntie? Or the one who tilted the bike each time you got on so you felt like a little princess?

Yes. It’s all of them.

Because at Bong Hostel, we don’t hire just anyone. We pick the kindest, safest, funniest, most thoughtful drivers in Ha Giang. They’re not just the best Easy Riders on the Ha Giang Loop. They’re the best part of your trip.

So next time you loop with us, don’t stress about which Easy Rider you get. You’ve already got the best one.

P.S. Even if you get a young Easy Rider do not worry, it's a different world out here—even if they’re 20 they’ve probably got around 10 years of motorbike experience. You can trust them better than that random westerner you let drive you around without a helmet in Bali, promise!
